KE8PRB is my amateur radio callsign, but it is also an aspiration. I aspire to find peace in the outdoors, to unplug from my daily life, and to find joy. In a world of climate change, ascending fascism, and structural inequality, being at peace and finding joy is a form of resistance. Quiet and rest are revolutionary in the face of hustle culture and doom scrolling. Being exhausted is how they get you. To me, KE8PRB is a person on vacation off the grid. I don’t get to be KE8PRB as much as I want to, but I aim to fix that.
This site is dedicated to documenting my amateur radio adventures and the equipment I use for them, starting small, but starting now. It is also dedicated to my adventures, on the trail, at the beach, and on the road. America is full of wonderful people and places, and it’s my duty to be a part of them. For a long time I saw travel, especially by air and for work, as something to dread. But in a car, on a bike, or on foot, there is peace in motion. Being away from home can be stressful, but it can also be spiritual and educational. Knowing how to have fun and be comfortable in harsh conditions is an important skill for helping friends and neighbors in an emergency.
Preparing for emergencies isn’t about guns and go-bags. Aside from food, water, and shelter, I think that a fire, a radio, and a med kit are probably the most useful things to have in an emergency. Being cold, wet, and alone sucks. If you are trying to keep it together for yourself and for others, being comfortable and rested can be game changing.
So if you are also an aspiring hiker, camper, traveler, or radio operator, this is the site for you!
